On-Campus Summer Pre-Med Academies
Learn clinical skills from guest speakers and Harvard Medical School students, develop a deep understanding of what it is like to study medicine, and explore medical specialties from cardiology to immunotherapy.
Biology & Chemistry
The Pre-Med: Biology and Chemistry Academy provides an opportunity for students to learn about genetics, immunology, CRISPR, and organic chemistry. Students will gain important medical background and take a deep dive into various diseases. The strong curriculum allows students to gain a better understanding of what being pre-med entails. This Academy culminates in a final presentation about a disease or genetic disorder, bringing together all the new skills our students learn throughout the program.
- Gain knowledge in genetics, immunology, and organic chemistry (including naming and structure).
- Discuss the ethics behind the controversial topic of CRISPR.
- Explore medical conditions, including Down Syndrome and Sickle Cell Anemia.
- Learn about hydrocarbons, alkanes, alkyl side groups, and naming.
- Take a deep dive into a specific inherited disease and have the opportunity to learn about diseases chosen by your peers.
Anatomy & Physiology
The Pre-Med: Human Anatomy and Physiology Academy provides an opportunity for students to gain knowledge about the various systems of the body. Learning about blood work and how to read medical images, including X-rays and MRIs, will prepare students for a case study analysis, where they will be put in the shoes of a team of emergency room medical workers. The strong curriculum allows students to not only learn about anatomy and physiology, but also gain a better understanding of what being pre-med entails.
- Take a deep dive into various systems of the body, including cardiology, pulmonology, dermatology, nephrology, gastroenterology, myology, neurology, and endocrinology.
- Understand how to view pathologies in X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, Ultrasonography and echocardiography, and PET scans.
- Learn about vital blood work and how it can detect pathologies.
- Simulate a team of emergency room doctors or triage nurses through a case study analysis and mock diagnosis.
